How to Say Goodbye

By: Regan Bell

I want to know how to say goodbye to those who leave us without warning;

The resilient absence left empty like a squeezed sponge of water.

Yet no words utter our mouths that don’t already come from

our tears and slide the blemished cheek.

Like dry ice in hot water, you evaporate

from our lives which you left us.

But aside ourselves, we stand alone in their shadows of the bowers.

Our tears will not bring them back.

I want to know how to have a mind that will move us forward

through angst and actions that take hold of us;

the betrayal of life that has lead us to think it will overcome death.

But each day brings new sorrows while we must put

aside our emotions and keep

from wallowing in such a solemn sky.

This is their terminal; they take the way that they must take.

Our distresses will not bring them back.

I want to know how to love again while such love has been torn from me.

Life gives perfect vision; so true but so harsh.

It takes away the people we love and never releases them.

Our adoration will not bring them back.
